Procrastination, laziness, or another excuse Print E-mail

This post deals with goals, motivation, and priorities.
It's been almost two weeks since my last blog post. When I added a blog page to my site, I set a goal to update my site at least twice a week, which included adding at least one blog post per week. My reason for planning this is for a couple of reasons. One, a client of mine, who is a marketer by profession, explained to me how a blog would help my web presence, and how that would help my business(Thanks, Terry. It works). Two, it gives prospective clients an idea of who I am, my ideas, opinions, and a bit of a glimpse into what kind of training methods and dietary practices I lean towards. That will hopefully help them with their decision about hiring me. I also like being of help, so giving out tips is something I enjoy doing.

Since this is a fitness (and health, exercise, and nutrition) related site, you may be wondering what point I'm trying to make, and how it relates to fitness, and you. Well, the fact that I didn't make a post in the past twelve days has nothing to do with a lack of motivation. And it wasn't entirely plain laziness. Not to say that can't be completely ruled out. It's not because I ran out of anything to write about. I meant to write a post yesterday, but decided to wait until today. Now that post will have to wait til tomorrow, since this one took priority. Which leads to my point. Priorities. Since the last post, I have worked out at least seven times. I had no excuse not to. I did spend a day working on my taxes. That was a priority, since I procrastinated, as usual, and waited until the 14th to do them.

Fortunately, the 14th was a Wednesday, which is a scheduled non workout day for me. Had it not been, well, I would have probably spent part of Thursday working on taxes. Because for me, I make exercise a priority. And I know that, when it comes to exercise, if you procrastinate, it's not the same as waiting, as it is with other things. If you're planning on making a major purchase, you might come out ahead by finding the price has gone down, or finding a great sale. If you hold off on going out because it's raining, sure the weather might improve. But everyday you put off exercise until tomorrow, is a day lost, that can't be made up.

We're all fighting against the natural aging process. Eating right and exercise are two great things you can do, today, to reverse the aging process. Everyday that you do not exercise is another day of being over fat, or too skinny, or weaker than you desire, or unfit or unhealthy. Each day that you do exercise puts you closer to staying healthy or getting healthier; staying fit or getting fitter; staying strong or getting stronger; staying big (I'm talking about muscle mass here) or getting bigger; staying slim or getting slimmer. You get the point. So, simply put, everyday you let laziness, lack of motivation, or whatever excuse you think of, cause you to put off exercising until tomorrow, is only making it harder on yourself. You may not be getting any younger, but if you take care of yourself, you can drastically slow down how much you look, feel, and act older.

Did you exercise today?

Well, yeah!! I exercise every day! It's no longer a question of finding motivation. I've built a habit and I always find motivation somewhere :-)

So here's a tougher question for you, Dr. J, do you remember the last day that you didn't workout? :D
