It wasn't until after I had solidified my plans for my vegan experiment and notified enough friends to help with my accountability that I realized that there is an occasion in June that allows me (normally) to not watch everything that I eat: Father's Day! Three times a year I allow myself to indulge in the one gastronomic vice that has absolutely no nutritional value at all: Donuts! Is there ever any room on one's nutritional plate for such a nutritionally void item? My answer is, it depends. In my case, had I ruled this vice to be allowed during my experiment, as, let's say a special father's day exception treat, maybe. Calories wise, yes. Depending on the size of the donut, it would have added anywhere from about 180 - 450 calories. Seeing how I was only at 62% of my total, I had plenty of room. Obviously, thanks to the S&W chili beans, I was already too close to my sodium limits and it would have been pushed over the top had I ate one. Of course I could use the 4 - 8 grams of protein, but at 12 - 24 grams of sugar and whatever grams of trans fat, it would not make sense to select a donut as a source of protein. But the thing to keep in mind is that it would have been consumed as a treat, not as a nutritious component of a meal. So knowing that, remember this: there is never a need to totally deprive yourself of your favorite food, as long as you are in good health and you don't over do it. With proper meal planning it is possible to add your favorite treat to your menu occasionally without wreaking havoc on your health and fitness program. If you're not in good health then you need to get your priorities straight and think about what is more important, your health, your life, or satisfying a few tastebuds for a few moments. My stats from Saturday were: 2423 Calories (74%), 127 g Fat, 0 mg Cholesterol, 837 mg Sodium, 290 g Carbohydrates, 102 g Sugars, 49 g Fiber, 55 g Protein Father's Day: 2031 Calories (62%), 106 g Fat, 0 mg Cholesterol, 2306 mg Sodium, 237 g Carbohydrates, 100 g Sugars, 33 g Fiber, 59 g Protein Monday the 22nd: 2298 Calories (70%), 91 g Fat, 0 mg Cholesterol, 2436 mg Sodium, 342 g Carbohydrates, 116 g Sugars, 54 g Fiber, 63 g Protein
