One thing that always irked me about shows like “Renovate My Family” and “The Biggest Loser” is the lack of followups. At the end of the show or season you get to see what change took place in the short term, but in most cases you’ll rarely find out what happens later. My opinion when it comes to major, rapid weight loss is because the style of eating was so extreme the individuals don’t “fall off the wagon” they leap off head first. I could easily see someone with little self discipline counting the days before they can indulge in what they temporarily avoided. I’ll admit I was counting the days, anxiously waiting the 1st of July. It was because I was in need of variety. I was also tired of logging my food, something that is a necessity if you’re trying to lose fat or gain weight. I wasn’t waiting to consume junk or guzzle a beer, just looking forward to adding different items to my plate. So if you’re expecting me to tell you horror stories of ravaging a whole cake or donuts by the dozen I’m sorry to disappoint. My breakfast on the first was 2 slices of whole wheat bread with peanut butter, 8 oz. of 2% milk, a banana, and 1 hard boiled egg. I didn’t have a real lunch that day. After my morning appointments I took some time for a shopping trip to Costco. I took my kids because it was about 12:30 in the afternoon, and like most of the shoppers there that time of day, they like the samples. That day they offered fruit chew snacks, various smoothies at some blender/juice demo, salmon cakes, apple pie ala mode, blueberries pancakes, wieners, garden salad with croutons and dressing, pulled pork, eggplant parmesan, garlic bread with butter, Yoplait yogurt, salsa on baked pita, and sausage. Had I been there in June I could have tried one thing. I did sample the salmon, some pulled pork, the garlic bread, and the eggplant. My stomach was queasy by the time we left. That afternoon I had some nuts and fruit before heading back out for an evening appointment. That night’s dinner was turkey burgers and corn on the cob, all made on the grill. It was nice to enjoy the same meal as the rest of the family. ![]() I have noticed that in just one month my body has become sensitive to certain foods. Anything processed just doesn’t even sound good at this point. My usual breakfast used to be 2 eggs over medium and 2 slices of lightly buttered toast, and a glass of orange juice. Now butter seems very unappealing to me. I’ve had an egg omelet with cheese and onion and a slice of toast with butter, but my new usual breakfast excludes butter. I did find myself almost craving almonds for an afternoon snack during the first week. I had some along with cashews. I guess I’ve developed a new good habit. One change I’ve noticed since being done with my extreme vegan diet is the improvement in my workout performance. My strength and energy are much higher. The post workout chocolate milk has never tasted better. I’ve been blending Bing cherries to it since they are still in season. As of yesterday I’m only 2.5 pounds from my pre vegan experiment weight. That put me back in the BMI’s overweight category. But that’s alright with me, I know the real truth.
