The Body Mass Index (BMI) uses the ratio of your height to weight to determine if you are over or underweight. For an individual of average build, a BMI of
18.5 to 24.9 is said to be in a normal, healthy weight range. An index of 18.5 or less is categorized as underweight. An index of 25.0 to 29.9 is categorized as overweight, and 30.0 or greater is obese. BMI only takes into consideration your height and weight. It does not factor in your body composition. If you have been strength training or have a naturally muscular build, it is possible that you could be categorized as overweight and have a healthy level of body fat. There are far more accurate methods of determining body composition and measuring your progress. Skinfold testing, circumference measures, bio-electrical impedance and underwater weighing are a few methods that can tell you if you have excess body fat, and how much.
